Powerhouse Beauties – Brisbane Sister Style

Brisbane fashion, Powerhouse photoshoot

Womens fashion Brisbane - sister style

I am fortunate to have two gorgeous cousins who were willing to show off their personal style, have a chat about what inspires them and share a fond memory of their sister.

We chose the Powerhouse in New Farm for two reasons: to make use of some great textures and use the river as a backdrop and because we were all keen to see the World Press Photo exhibition (which I highly recommend, it’s as amazing as it is moving).

How would you describe your style?

Sarah: My style is pretty eclectic and changes depending on my mood and the weather. Sometimes I feel like being hippy, beachy, rock, boho or sometimes i love to frock up. I mostly live in jeans for my work though and own at least 4 or 5 pairs at the moment!!

Clare: For work it’s very corporate & I live in Cue, I love that it’s all made in Australia & their clothing just fits me perfectly. When I’m not working I like to keep it quite casual with good quality basics and dress them up with jewellery or scarves. I suppose my style is subtle and classic.

Who is your style icon or someone who inspires you creatively?

Sarah: I don’t think I have a style icon per say but I do get inspired everyday by my creative colleagues and the creative young people I work with.

Clare: My style icons are… everyone! I love people watching, mainly just to see what they’re wearing and I often have to fight the urge to go up to people & ask them where they got their top from. So I think I draw inspiration from everyone: family & friends. I also love following celebrities like Miranda Kerr, Nicole Ritchie and Anne Hathaway.

Favourite memory of something fun you did with your sister?

Sarah: My favourite memory is of Clare and I on a train travelling through Portugal when we were 20, it was a train with open windows and old leather seats, the scenery was gorgeous and I just remember looking at her and thinking: wow this is amazing!!

Clare: Well we’re actually lucky enough to have another sister and I remember when we were younger, in the school holidays, we used to dress up & do ‘photo shoots’ and our hallway became the runway. There would be some very funny photos somewhere of us ‘modelling’!!!

Classic Men’s Winter Style by the River

Perry Ellis and mens fashion Brisbane

Roger David scarf and mens fashion

Tim knows what he likes, his clothing choices are simple, classic and well tailored. We had an afternoon by the river at West End where he showed off his love of classic men’s tailoring in this G-Star Raw pea coat.

Mens pea coat and fashion in Brisbane

Men's fashion Brisbane, winter pea coat

G-Star Raw mens pea coat

What are you wearing?
A Roger David striped scarf, Perry Ellis brown leather gloves which I bought in New York, Julias Marlow, premium model, brown shoes and G-Star Raw, correct pea coat.

Which is your favourite season?

Autumn, because you can sense that everyone’s excited for winter, and you still see people out and about because they aren’t frozen yet.

What are your favourite men’s clothing stores?

I regularly keep an eye on Roger David. Uniqlo is also a favourite. Plain and well fitted is my style, so I tend to avoid noisier, grungy stores like City Beach or General Pants.

Who is your style icon or someone who inspires you creatively?

Edgar Wright. The man is an amazing director who really brings out the best in the talent around him. And, he’s dating Anna Kendrick. Style wise, George Clooney is an inspiration. He has a mature, refined sense of charm about him and he keeps fashion simple and classic.

What do you love about being a Web Technical Consultant?

It’s a creative job, every day is about communicating with people, solving problems and as a result, you’re never bored. To be successful at it you have to make an effort to stay ahead of the game. I enjoy that challenge.

A Day at the Beach with Be Bitko

Be Bitko clothing designer

I recently had the great pleasure to work with Be Bitko Clothing to shoot their lookbook at the Gold Coast. The weather was less than ideal but the cloudy skies ended up making the bright colours of the clothing pop even more.

This Brisbane based label produces an array of functional and fashionable bags that can be worn around your waist and matched with different coloured shorts to suit your style and mood.

Summer looks with light tops

I spoke to Emily Bitkow, the designer behind Be Bitko Clothing, about how she got started and what inspires her.

How did Be Bitko start?

Be Bitko started over 2 years ago from my love for fashion, love of PR and marketing and interest in running my own business.

The idea for the label was brewing for a while and started with testing out the idea for a fashionable bum bag by tying one of my bags around my waist at a festival. After receiving many compliments I decided to start developing my idea and making prototypes. I love the idea of mixing and matching these fashionable bags with comfortable shorts for a hands free, fun festival day.

Be Bitko Clothing is made locally and I have no plans to send my operation overseas. I love being able to turn around new ideas quickly and get them out to my customers for them to give me feedback on the colours and prints and therefore reduce waste. Rather than do collections I like the flexibility to regularly bring out new colours and styles.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Pinterest is a major source of inspiration, as are fashion magazines. Sometimes ideas just come to me – the yellow birds of paradise print was created from a desire to be bright and colourful. The label is about focusing on colour, excitement and freedom and it needs to look great in a festival environment.

How would you describe your style?

I love being different, a lot of my clothing is custom made by a family friend who is a seamstress, I would say my style is classic, vintage and a little bit edgy, because I love chunky jewellery.

Who is your style icon / someone that inspires you creatively?

I love Sass and Bide and aspire to be as quirky and successful as them. Everything they produce is amazing and I have several of their pieces in my wardrobe.

Man Up! A Monochromatic Winter Outfit with a Pop of Colour

Wearing Wranger jeans and Guess teal turned up sleeve blazer

Betts clutch and Guess boyfriend Blazer a turquoise dream

I’m not a very ‘girlie’ girl, I do enjoy wearing dresses, but my first love is a great jeans, boots and blazer combo! I found this amazing Guess boyfriend blazer with teal lining and fell in love! It is so soft and comfortable and I loved the pop of colour. I couldn’t find it online but I found another one I would love to add to my collection the – G-Star Raw boyfriend blazer with leatherette cuffs and the same relaxed fit.

I am wearing my favourite pair of jeans which are the Wrangler mid twiggy – between high and low rise they are comfortable enough to wear all day.

Nine West toughen up boots, you need these!

I found these boots after a long search for ankle boots and they were comfortable as soon as I put them on (as you can tell I appreciate comfort in my clothing)! They are Nine West toughen up and what drew me to them was the subtle worn finish which didn’t scream shiny new boots but had a pre-loved feel.

The Russian open weave collared shirt from Portmans (which is unfortunately sold out online) caught my eye because of the amazing details around the shoulders. Initially I wasn’t sure about the ‘cowboy’ feel but sometimes you just have to try new things!

There was no shortage of gorgeous people to photograph at Fashion Weekly’s 7th Birthday Party! Everyone had a great time sipping champagne, mingling with Brisbane’s fashion elite and marvelling at the elaborate couture clad models positioned around the room.

C Gallery is a contemporary art space which showcased some amazing artists including, Beth Mitchell, who’s fashion inspired photography was on display.

Some men, such as my boyfriend, don’t really change their wardrobe much between seasons, so having good wardrobe staples are essential. This is one of my favourite looks of his because it’s simple and has a point of difference when he rolls up his sleeves, there is a hint of pattern! We had fun on this afternoon where I was doing some location scouting in Paddington and experimenting with different textures and perspectives.

Vintage Sheer Floral Dress on a Sunny Afternoon

Yellow vintage dress and vintage frames

Floral vintage dress and black belt

Vintage outfit in the afternoon sun with orange stockings

The weather in Brisbane is perfect at the moment! You can still wear summer dresses, with stockings for a little extra warmth, as you can see by Alisha’s gorgeous vintage outfit! I can imagine the original owner of this dress driving a convertible car with a Grace Kelly-esque scarf tied around her head.

Alisha is wearing a 50′s sheer floral dress from a vintage fair, Columbine burnt orange stockings and Florent from Joanne Mercer shoes. This was an unplanned shoot, Alisha was off to a family gathering and I was lucky to have this beautiful afternoon light on my side!

ShopLate: Fashion and Drinks Presented By Fashionista Events

stylish ladies at Brisbane fashion event

Shopaholic ladies couldn’t resist the temptation of ShopLate, presented by Fashionista Events, which promised a range of local and international labels, on sale, with complimentary beverages from McLaren Vale (the cider was delicious). It was a fun way to spend a Friday evening with my friends and I will do a future post showcasing my purchases from the event!

LadyFest Brisbane – Viva La Femme Art Exhibition

LadyFest organisers

These lovely ladies are some of the talented women responsible for the LadyFest art exhibition titled ‘Viva La Femme’! The exhibition was held at Lust For Life tattoo, gallery and espresso bar, and showcased the work of some of Brisbane’s most talented female artists.

The gallery space was filled to capacity with an eclectic mix of women (and men) who came to appreciate the art and support LadyFest. It was a fun event even though I unfortunately missed the hula-hooping lady earlier in the night!

Urban Casual

Zanerobe clothing, Belt is Politix, shoes from Industrie.

“My personal style is a combination of urban, casual and relaxed. Complete coincidence but my chinos, tee and jacket are from Zanerobe, I guess you could say they’re on the top of my brand list for clothing. Belt is Politix and the shoes are Industrie.”

men's fashion in Brisbane - Industrie shoes and Zanerobe t-shirt and chinos

The stylish males of Brisbane have been under-represented on the blog, but change is coming! Starting with the very stylish Clinton, web designer and developer at GOMA and all round great guy (he is even an amazing cook)! After our photo shoot we had a chat about his favourite stores and inspirations:

What are your favourite men’s clothing stores?
Favourite stores, would be David Jones, Glue and Industrie. Favourite men’s online stores are Asos, Surfstitch and The Iconic.

Who is your style icon or someone who inspires you creatively?
Tough question actually, I couldn’t say I have a singular style icon, I observe and draw a lot from pop culture. I like the simple classic styles of people like James Dean: popped up collar, leather jacket, t-shirt, jeans and boots.
